The Shrug Chair:
Summer 2024

As part of a study abroad course in Copenhagen with DIS (Danish Institute for Study Abroad), this furniture piece was created. The course focused on studying Scandinavian design and applying its principles to chair design. The Shrug Chair embodies the humble and honest qualities that are quintessential to Danish design.

THE FINAL CHAIR

The Shrug Chair’s design primarily takes inspiration from the simplicity of Danish design. The aim is to create a basic silhouette that combines the curvature of the seat with the legs. While the chair's construction holds complexities, these are hidden by the paper cord-wrapped seat, giving The Shrug Chair an air of simplicity. Meant for lounging and resting, the seat’s large, wide curve invites one to put their feet up. The ability to sit in various positions, including cross-legged, highlights the chair’s versatility.

The aesthetics of this chair heavily draw on the environment it was created in. Inspired by the Spanish Chair, People’s Chair, and Propeller Stool, the form, style, and materials used were directly drawn from Danish designs.
